Lesson 3

Set an alert and let your AI watch for you

Your task today

Set up a watch and check how it reports back.

Use one example from your own business as you work through the lesson.

There is a category of thing you keep meaning to check and never check at the right moment. A restock. A hearing date. Whether the tool you rely on changed under you last Tuesday. You don't forget these things because you're disorganized — you forget them because remembering to check something on an unknown schedule is a genuinely bad job for a human brain.

That is a good job for your AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot — whichever you use). You can hand it a standing question — watch this, tell me when — and get the answer without doing the digging yourself. This lesson sets up four real ones, in descending order of how much I'd trust them, because the honest part of this lesson is knowing which alerts work.

Before we start, the honest part about tools and money. Having the AI check something on a schedule, by itself is not something every tool does, and the ones that do it don't all do it free. As of this writing:

  • ChatGPT has it — it calls them tasks — and the free plan now includes it: up to three active tasks, each running once a day in a rough window (morning, afternoon, evening) rather than at an exact minute. Exact times and more frequent runs need a paid plan, such as ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.
  • Gemini has it — scheduled actions — but only on the paid Google AI Pro and Ultra plans.
  • Claude doesn't have a scheduling feature in its chat app that I could find.
  • Copilot has a Tasks feature in a limited preview, so most accounts won't see it yet.

Here's the important part: you can do everything in this lesson on the free plan of any tool. The difference is who pushes the button. With scheduling, the AI checks on its own and messages you. Without it, you paste the same request in when you want the answer — same information, you're just the timer. There's a free workaround further down that makes that practical, and I'd rather tell you now than let you hit it three steps in.
